Sensory Bottles

I am a big fan of using everyday items in our play with Daniel and Emma. It's easy to forget that everything is new to a baby and toddler and that they can take great delight in exploring the everyday and, to us, mundane objects that surround us.

One of the popular activities I have put together for Daniel (which Emma is now beginning to enjoy) is our sensory bottles.

These are used and empty bottles of different sizes and shapes, each with different items in them. I use old plastic milk cartons, water bottles, cordial, mouth wash etc.

There is no end to the things that you can put in the bottles, either things that make a noise when shaken or something that delights a little ones eyes.

Some of the things I have in our sensory bottles include:

  • Bells (Daniel's fave as a baby)
  • Pipe Cleaners (Emma loves this one)
  • Buttons
  • Lentils
  • Dried pasts
  • Coloured water
  • Water with pom poms
  • Water with cut up pipe cleaners
  • Coins
  • Rice

There are so many things you can put in here, and as the children get older we can talk about size, shape and weight. With the pipe cleaners we can talk about the colours we see etc. So much potential with such an everyday item.

Do you use sensory bottles? What sorts of things do you put in yours?

Why not pin this post for future reference?
